Biography
Sambhaji Maharaj was the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and succeeded his father as the second emperor of the Maratha Empire. His reign was marked by a relentless war against the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Sambhaji proved himself a capable commander and administrator, expanding Maratha influence through campaigns in Goa and Mysore. He was captured by the Mughals in 1689 through betrayal. When offered the choice between conversion to Islam and death, he chose death. Aurangzeb subjected him to a gruesome execution lasting weeks. His martyrdom electrified the Maratha resistance and ultimately led to the collapse of Aurangzeb's military campaign in the Deccan.
